“Piya Rang Kala” the novel by Mohammed Yahya Khan is the story of a Sheesh Nag (the king of cobras). It is said that this mythic name is so fascinating in its beauty and colours that one cannot see it constantly. It begins to grow black in its colour and its eyes become white as it grows. Then, it makes its path whitish where from it passes. When it grows young, it has the capability of hanging itself into the air. Any one who happens to watch it, is charmed. Sheesh Nag of a hundred years changes itself into a man. Then numberless stories are generated about it.

Mohammed Yahya Khan has done a great favour to Urdu fiction by writing this novel. It has quite a different style reflecting the extensive experience and the ever flowing observation. Yahya Khan has the art of transporting the reader with himself and takes him wherever he likes. This novel has the events of a myth as well as the hidden psychological trickery of human psyche. It is also full of the wisdom of common life. Whatever experiments were needed to write this novel, and the flow of the pen to write such a story, was an action which could only be performed by a restless soul like Mohammed Yahya Khan.

Mohammed Yahya Khan is such a door which opens into a monastery. It is such a gushing fountain from which children peep into a temple. It is the eye of that blind mother who is trying to find her lost child with the tick-tick of her stick. Mohammed Yahya Khan is a spring that comes out of a grave making its silent way into the graveyard. It is such a curtain which a hysteric girl is trying to find life. Mohammed Yahya Khan is a zoom lens as well as an internet screen. If you want to know the future of Urdu novel, you may read this novel. The Art of a Story Teller
This is a story of the complicated and mysterious events. I started reading this book for entertainment because I liked the writings and the style of Mohammed Yahya Khan. It has the quality of transporting the reader with itself. It catches hold of him completely and does not allow his attention go astray. It absorbs him fully in its scenes and varieties. When the reader is involved once, he begins to flow with it. The reader finds himself traversing into a long journey with a wish to reach his destination. As this book is voluminous and speaks more than its writing, therefore I started it quite cautiously and vigilantly. I tried to be independent of it for a while then I lost myself. But, in spite of this absorption, I did not close my eyes and whatever I saw with my wide opened eyes, it was a new experience and a strange happening.

This book generally may be called a memoir. Although whatever the writer has experienced it has not been experienced by me, yet I cannot refute such happenings. Many people have undergone such experiments but nobody has bothered to listen to them. People with such experiences have been set aside and usually called as untrue. The modern age of Urdu literature does not take into consideration such events, observations and conditions because it is focusing all its attention to Science, Logic and Reasoning. As a result, it is considered that all such writings are doubtful and of weak-faith. The western people have been enthusiastically working on it but the Urdu speaking world has finished its consideration concluding that it was only a superstition.

From this closed up chapter, a mongoose has brought out a bundle of papers having the strip of “Piya Rang Kala” around it. These bundles of paper tells such a story of complicated and strange events that sometimes it reflects Frazier’s “Golden Bow” and sometimes in the writings of Collin Wilson. Sometimes it is kindled with the warm energy of Gurchief.

These are the common events, some quite clear and some in the background. When you read them, you may strongly point out your finger and say how such events can happen. The reader will think why he has not undergone such experiences which Mohammed Yahya Khan has told. Such a supposition by the reader is equal to saying why should it be admitted that pallah fish (a kind of fish) is the most delicious according to a Sindhi fisherman when he himself has not tasted it. And, on such a supposition, all what is said by the Sindhi fisherman is rejected.

As the intelligent readers of Urdu bear the stamp of scientific attitudes, therefore, this book will remain under discussion incessantly. The western researchers will start pondering on it after getting it translated and try to know how vast is the unknown world and what is happening within it.
I am reading this for consecutive time and I feel pleased that the Urdu literature has been enriched by a rather great book. I want to congratulate the writer but can’t do so because it is usual with the senior writers to congratulate the juniors but here the case is quite different.

Each time I am forced to devise a new opinion but can never be obliged to surrender even until I have caught hold of his true colour and that is “Piya Rang Kala”
